Other Village People events curator Andiswa Dlamini and cultural worker Kefiloe Siwisa are set to host a three-day LGBTQIA+ event called Queertopia between Thursday 18 November and Saturday 20 November which will feature some of Mzansi’s top acts, including popular amapiano DJ DBN Gogo.

Siwisa mentioned that Other Village People was founded because of a lack of safe spaces that prioritise LGBTQIA+ people. Siwisa and Dlamini have curated other LGBTQI+ events around the country such as Same Sex Saturdays and Annual All Black Edition.

“LGBTQIA+ [people] are often faced with discrimination, microaggressions and even hate crimes,” Siwisa told Eyewitness News.

Speaking about Queertopia, Siwisa described the event as a “reimagining of a country”.

“A new world order that normalises and celebrates our differences as if it’s always been that way.”

“The people are at the centre of Queertopia. Imagine what the world would feel like if it were designed by and for queer communities,” added Dlamini.

Queertopia will have something for everyone. Day one is called The House of New Order. This will be a cocktail evening that will mark the opening ceremony of Queertopia. Congo Muffin, Rosie Parade and Thanda Kunene.

The House of Spirits will be day two of Queertopia and will be an intimate space for people to connect with each other. There will be performances by powerful singer-songwriter Buhlebendalo, Nonku Phiri and Muneyi who performed on the AfroPunk stage in 2019.

Day three titled The House of the People will be the closing party of the residency. There will be performances from amapiano DJ DBN Gogo, Kat Upendi, Lotion, Sjay and Phatstoki.

All three days will kick off at 17:00.
