In 2022, there was much dismay as many who wanted mardi gras tickets could not get them due to Covid-19 restrictions that capped the number of people who could attend.

In 2023, there are no limits, and the event promises to be the biggest Cape Town Pride Mardi Gras ever with an impressive line-up of talent performing on the Pride stage on Saturday 4 March.

Back by popular demand are the evergreen 3 Tons of Fun; Afro-House sensation, 3 Fingers from Crossroads; the electrifying 3Divas drag trio (celebrating their 13th year on the Cape Town Pride stage), and 2016 Runner Up in SA’s Got Talent and South Africa’s Queen of Queens, Manila von Teez.

Performing on the main stage for the first time are singer Craig Jordaan from Elsie’s River; 2019 SAMA nominee Jarrad Ricketts; recipients of the Pride Heroes Award for best newcomers of the year, The Trans-formers; and Mama Africa of Drag, Belinda Qaqamba Ka-Fassie.

You can also expect “a sample” from the Timeless Festival, which is happening the weekend after Pride, curated by Death of Glitter and featuring club kid par excellence Ina Propriette, backed by DJs Queezy and Angel Ho.

Cape Town Pride is confident that a new world record will be achieved!

The headline act is Cape Town homegirl, Dope St Jude. After four years touring and living abroad, she will perform her first show in South Africa since 2019.

It is especially significant to her as Cape Town Pride was her first exposure to the queer community as a teenager.

“I started attending Pride at the age of 16. I snuck into town without telling my parents, because I wanted to be around my people,” she says.

Having started her career as a drag king in Cape Town, Dope St Jude had one of her first opportunities performing on a mini pride stage at the age of 19.

After touring extensively throughout Europe, releasing her second EP and having her music synced on Netflix, Apple TV, HBO and Dreamworks, she is excited to come back to her roots and put on a show for her community.

And if this wasn’t enough, Cape Town Pride will attempt to break the Guinness World Record for “Largest Drag Artist Stage Show” at the Mardi Gras. This honour is currently held by Toronto Pride which in July 2016 managed to get 73 drag queens and kings lined up for a record-breaking performance.

Hosting the day’s entertainment will be MC Naythan Kayser while the DJs for the day are Kixi, PJ Smith and Groovy Q.

As well as this stellar line-up, there will be a wide range of food stalls, a market stalls village selling a myriad of delights, a shisha bar, photo booths, and a children’s jumping castle area with face painting.
