The key of David. Have you ever wondered what the Bible means when it talks about it?

I will place on his shoulder the key to the house of David; what he opens no one  can shut, and what he shuts no one can open.”

Isaiah 22:22 (NIV)

“To the angel of the church in Philadelphia write: These are the words of him who is holy and true, who holds the key of David. What he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open.”

Revelation 3:7 (NIV)

From these verses, we get to understand that the keys hold authority! The “key of David” implies control of David’s domain which was promised to the Messiah in both the Old and the New Testament (Isaiah 9:7 and Luke 1:32).

God and the key of David

Why is it specifically referred to as the “key of David”? David was a man after God’s heart! (1 Samuel 13:14)

God is not interested in shallow worship, empty words, frigid feelings, superficial service or legalistic  rituals. The bible says He desires truth in our inward parts (Psalm 51:6). He desires people who serve him from a heart of devotion and obedience.

In my friendship circle, all the parents that I talk to absolutely love it when their adult children intentionally seek them out, wanting to spend time with them; desiring to get to know them more and just to relax and enjoy their company. Isn’t it great to be loved and appreciated?

God is the ultimate Father! What joy you bring to His heart when you actively seek Him out, loving Him more and more each day, enjoying His presence and delighting in pleasing Him.

This was the heart of David! David understood that loving God was his highest priority in life. David  knew that love is the key that opens the door to the secret place of the Most High God!

Therefore, God gave him the keys to His heart.

God is seeking those who are seeking the Father heart of God.

There is much to be done on earth (in our generation, while we are alive), and God longs for us to  take up our God-given authority, so that in and through Christ, we can bind up the broken hearted  and set the captive free (Isaiah 61:1).

In Matthew 16, Jesus asked Peter: “Who do you say that I am” and when Peter answered: “You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God”, Jesus responded saying:

“I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth  will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”

Matthew 16:19 (NIV)

The key to having this authority therefore, is to believe that Jesus is the Christ, the only begotten son  of God, the Messiah who died to redeem us from sin and death.

The more you seek Him, the more you find Him, the more you love Him. The more you love Him, the more His power is released in and through you. It is not about performance, or rituals – God looks at the heart!

There is nothing and no-one throughout the world that can take the place deep within that has been  prepared especially for Jesus. He alone can make you whole and complete, lacking nothing….no good thing! As you allow Him to fill you, He will overflow through you to the world around you.

PRAYER

Oh Abba, how I long to love you as you deserve to be loved!

Help me seek you and find you as I search with all my heart!

May your Kingdom come, and your will be done on earth, in and through each of us we pray.

Help us take hold of these keys and unlock the wonders of your Kingdom each day. In the name of Jesus, we ask this.

Amen
