Here’s when ‘The Woman King’ will be released in SA theatres

Release dates for ‘The Woman King’ with SA star Thuso Mbedu and Viola Davis were announced during the Emmy Awards on Tuesday.

It’s finally coming! Star studded and packed with proud black female talent, The Woman King will finally hit South African shores on 30 September 2022. Release dates for The Woman King were announced during the Emmy Awards which took place on Tuesday 13 September 2022.

The highly anticipated film stars the incomparable Viola Davis alongside breakout South African talent Thuso Mbedu (Underground Railroad) and No Time to Die star Lashana Lynch.

Directed by the award-winning writer and director of Love and Basketball, Gina Prince-Bythewood, the film is already the rated the 107th most popular title on IMdb. The movie is set to hit American cinemas this Thursday 15 September.

Two-time Emmy nominated actress Mbedu appeared on a promotional video on Tuesday evening announcing the release of the film and introducing a new trailer.

A new trailer for The Woman King was released on 13 September 2022 during the announcement of the film’s highly anticipated release dates.

African pride

Other South Africans stars appearing in the film include Sivuyile “Siv” Ngesi, Riaan Visman, Seputla Sebogodi and Kekole Mathabathe. Benin-born global pop icon Angélique Kidjo will also be appearing in the film as herself.

The action fantasy film is based in a cinematic universe of The Kingdom of Dahomey, one of the most powerful states of Africa in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Viola Davis talks about journey

Davis has opened up on Good Morning America about how gruelling her fitness regime became during her preparation for The Woman King. During her press tour for the movie, Davis spoke to the publication about just how much it took to become “a woman king”. Take a look:
