It never rains, it pours for Katlego Maboe – but in this scenario, he seems to be the one responsible for the deluge: The Expresso presenter and star of the Outsurance adverts will appear in court later this week, as his bitter feud with his ex-partner has intensified dramatically. Here’s what you need to know, as the saga takes another twist…
As reported by Rapport earlier on Sunday, he allegedly violated the court’s protection order to stay away from his former lover Monique Muller. The pair also have a two-year-old child together, who is currently in Muller’s custody.
Monique Muller obtained the order on Thursday 3 September in Sea Point, Cape Town. This was shortly after she discovered that Katlego Maboe had engaged in an illicit affair, allegedly giving an STD to the so-called ‘mistress’.
Katlego Maboe, as well as Monique Muller, will have to be in court this coming Tuesday 3 November. It’s not yet clear what will happen if the TV personality is found guilty of breaching the terms of Muller’s protection order.
Several sources, including media blogger TV With Thinus, claim that Maboe cheated on Monique while working in Ukraine earlier this year. It’s believed he had sexual intercourse with a competition winner – the apparent source of the STD.
Whatever happens on Tuesday, it seems like Katlego already has the support of 66 000 petition signatures – and counting:
“If Outsurance doesn’t bring Katlego back, this petition will be signed by South Africans to boycott the company until you bring the poor guy back on our screens again. This young man deserves a chance – because he was not drunk, nor was he abusing any woman or taking drugs in the eyes of the public. It is merely a bedroom issue.”

One expert opinion, shared with CapeTalk on Sunday, suggests that producers find themselves in a catch-22 situation. Although they would have grounds to consider removing Maboe, this current period of uncertainty is actually beneficial for SABC:
“When you are linked to a particular brand, and matters within your personal life come out in the public domain, they have a negative impact on the image and the brand of the employer. But from a PR perspective for Expresso, the viewership is skyrocketing right now as every single person is waiting to see if Katlego is going to be on TV.”
