DJ SHIMZA CLAIMS ‘PHUZE REMIX’ AS AFROHOUSE

Dlala Thukzin’s hit Phuze Remix featuring Zaba, Sir Trill, the late Mpura and Rascoe Kaos has caused quite the stir on Twitter.

DJ Shimza took to Twitter on 22 August to share that the afrohouse community is claiming it as theirs.

TWEEPS HAVE THEIR SAY

Some tweeps were unsure about whether to classify the Phuze Remix as amapiano or gqom. Although producer Dlala Thukzin didn’t confirm anything himself, tweeps made their own minds up but what genre the song was.

Dlala Thukzin has worked with both gqom and amapiano artists in the past.

One tweep highlighted that the track sounds like gqom to them, while another said the Phuze Remix was afrotech.

“I love pianos but this is definitely a Gqom song ngiyema lapho akukho Afro ya neks la”.

WHOSE GENRE IS IT ANYWAY?

Musicians in Mzansi have dipped into a few genres and it seems like music lovers don’t seem to mind. Rappers Reason and Boity dabbled in some amapiano that left fans both confused and excited. Reason collaborated with DJ Maphorisa in a single titled Khanda Shisa under a new name, Sizwe Alakine.

Junior De Rocka is also another musician who has his hands in a few genres. The successful musician has worked on an amapiano track with Lady Du, Catalia, and on a hip-hop track with Emtee.

DJ Shimza recently released a three-track project remixing some of his favourite amapiano hits into afrotech. Major League DJz were previously hip-hop DJs but are now dominating the amapiano scene.

One could say Mzansi musicians are inspired by the power of collaboration!
