From original African television series and films to thrilling international content, Showmax always has content for everyone. Take a look at 10 international television series to watch on Showmax in May.

1. ‘HALO’

Halo is based on one of the highest-grossing game franchises of all time. The series set a new record as the most-watched original series on Paramount+ in its first 24 hours of release. The series dramatises an epic 26th-Century conflict between humanity and an alien threat. Halo stars Pablo Schreiber as the iconic Master Chief.

The series is set to hit Showmax on 20 May.

2. ‘THE GIRL FROM PLAINVILLE’

Inspired by real events, The Girl From Plainville sees American actress Elle Fanning take on the role of Michelle Carter, a teenager at the centre of the “texting suicide case” following the death of her boyfriend, Conrad Roy. The seires also stars Liz Hannah, Colton Ryan, Chloë Sevigny and Patrick Macmanus. 

The Girl From Plainville has been described as a “compassionate and devastating portrait of two teens in trouble”. 

The series will be available on Showmax from 23 May.

3. ‘THE RIGHTEOUS GEMSTONES’ SEASON TWO

The famous televangelist family is back, with more deviance, greed and charitable work in The Righteous Gemstones. Season two of the comedy series sees the Gemstone family threatened by outsiders from the past and the present who are on a mission to destroy their empire. 

The series stars Oscar nominee Eric Roberts, Danny KcBribe, John Goodman, Edi Patterson, Adam Devine, Skyler Gisondo and Walton Goggins.

4. ‘WOMEN OF THE MOVEMENT’

Women of the Movement is a six-part series that tells the true story of Mamie Till-Mobley who devotes her life to seeking justice for her son Emmet Till following his brutal murder in 1955. The television series, starring Adrienne Warren, has received a 91% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

5. ‘AND JUST LIKE THAT’

Carrie Bradshaw and the girls are back in HBO Max’s Sex and the City revival, And Just Like That. In the 10-episode series, Carrie, Miranda and Charlotte are navigating the ups and downs of marriage, children, friendship and the hustle and bustle of New York City. 

Emmy-nominee Sara Ramirez and Little Fires Everywhere star Sarita Choudhury join the series as new characters.

6. ‘THE NORTH WATER’

The North Water is based on Ian McGuire’s 2016 novel of the same name. The series, set in 1859, follows ex-army surgeon Patrick Sumner who signs up as a ship doctor on a whaling expedition to the Arctic. Directed by Andrew Haigh, the series sees Sumner later clash with one of the crewmates that later takes them on a journey on the seas.

7. ‘ALEX RIDER’ SEASON TWO 

Alex Rider is based on the best-selling books of the same name by Anthony Horowitz. In season two, Alex Rider is on a mission to put his past behind him and rebuild his life. Sadly, when a horrific attack brings him back to the world of spies, he must unravel a sinister plan with serious consequences.

8. ‘CHEATERS’

Cheaters is described as a “sexy, messy comedy about love, morality, monogamy and how the heart, brain and body are idiots who are never on the same page.”

The series, directed by award-winning director Elliot Hegarty, begins with a cancelled flight, a chance meeting and an intimate night in an airport between two strangers.

9. ‘THE PEMBROKESHIRE MURDERS’

The Pembrokeshire Murders dramatises the real-life 2006 investigation into two unsolved murder cases linked to a string of burglaries in the 1980s. The series stars Luke Evans, Alexandria Riley and Keith Allen.

10. ‘CATHERINE THE GREAT’

Catherine the Great is a four-part series based in the 18th century and centered around Russia’s longest-ruling female leader. Written by Nigel Williams and directed by Phillip Martin, the film stars Jason Clarke, Gina McKee and Kevin McNally.
