President Cyril Ramaphosa says that South Africa fully supports international education and advocacy organisation Global Citizen’s latest concert initiative Vax Live: The Concert to Reunite the World to be aired on 8 May via YouTube.

‘VAX LIVE: THE CONCERT TO REUNITE THE WORLD’

Global Citizen announced that the aim of the global broadcast and streaming special of Vax Live: The Concert to Reunite the World is to tackle COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy and celebrate a hopeful future for communities to reunite after receiving the COVID-19 vaccine.

“International advocacy organisation Global Citizen, known for its advocacy work and impactful campaigns in support of pressing social issues, is spearheading this event calling on world leaders to ensure the equitable distribution of vaccines around the world,” stated the event’s press release.

“The focus is particularly on aiding African countries, many of which are lagging behind their more affluent Western neighbours in their COVID-19 vaccine rollouts,” read the media statement.

RAMAPHOSA SHOWS SUPPORT FOR ‘VAX LIVE’ CONCERT

President Cyril Ramaphosa confirmed that South Africa gives the event its full support as he urges the world’s leaders to free up access to vaccines for the poorer countries.

“South Africa is fully behind this initiative to be part of a collective effort to recover after the devastating pandemic,” said President Cyril Ramaphosa according to Sowetanlive.

“The ‘Recovery Plan for the World’ is a good opportunity to get the international community working together to drive equitable access to vaccines for everyone, everywhere. Again, I urge world leaders to urgently free up excess supply for poorer countries,” the President continued.

“Today, the world is facing an unprecedented health, social and economic crisis. Now is the time to act in the interests of the whole world, now is the time to become truly global citizens,” the president added.

SELENA GOMEZ TO HOST VAX LIVE

The Vax Live concert will be hosted by Selena Gomez and will feature a star-studded line-up of artists who will perform, such as Jennifer Lopez, Eddie Vedder, J Balvin, H.E.R and more.

“I’m honoured to be hosting VAX LIVE: The Concert to Reunite the World,” said Selena Gomez according to Global Citizen.

“This is a historic moment to encourage people around the world to take the COVID-19 vaccine when it becomes available to them, call on world leaders to share vaccine doses equitably, and to bring people together for a night of music in a way that hasn’t felt possible in the past year. I can’t wait to be a part of it,” she added.
