Go big or go home, right? That was the motto for Racquel Palmer who forked out big bucks for not one, but two billboards with her face on it, in an effort to get the attention of Tyler Perry.
The actress was hoping that the renowned Hollywood producer would spot the signs — strategically placed near his Atlanta studios — which read: “Attention Mr Perry. Racquel Palmer is your next leading lady”.
Her goal was to stand out from the crowd — literally — and land a lead role in one of the filmmaker’s movies. And now, two years later, her dream has been realised.
Not only did the actress take a leap of faith with her bold billboard – which cost over $2000 (about R30 000) to erect – but so did Tyler Perry who has now cast Racquel in his upcoming TV series All The Queen’s Men.
But not before publicly admonishing her for her sneaky strategy…
After pictures of the billboard went viral, the screen mogul took to his social media to politely reject her gesture.
He wrote: “Here’s the deal. This is not the way to get my attention if you’re looking for a role in one of my shows. Please DON’T DO THIS, SAVE YOUR MONEY! JUST COME AND AUDITION.”
“I love that you want to work with me, and I love that you invest in yourself…But when you do things like this it puts my team on high alert and makes me look at you sideways.”-Tyler Perry
Racquel defended her actions, claiming she was only trying to go after her dream.
She told CNN at the time; “I wanted my children to see me go after my dreams at any cost. Because one day they’ll have to chase a dream, and I’ll be able to say, ‘You can do it because Mommy did’”.
“Sometimes in life, you just have to take a leap of faith, believe in yourself so much that others will think what you’re doing is crazy.”– Racquel Palmer
Racquel has bagged a top role in the TV series based on the book Ladies Night by author Christian Keye, which comes out next month on channel BET+.
The Tyler Perry production also stars model and actress Eva Marcelle, who plays an astute businesswoman who runs a male strip club.
Racquel will take on the role of ‘head of security’ where she is bound to tackle some tricky situations, seen in a trailer for the new series.
And whilst she admits it is her billboards that caught Tyler’s eye, the actress also claims the two have never really addressed the situation in real life.
She told TMZ: “We’ve never spoke of the billboard. It’s just an actor-director relationship. It’s just like it never happened”.
