Tom Daley from Britain recently went viral for ‘knitting his way through the Olympics’.

Olympians and their hobbies

The 27-year-old diver made headlines after he was spotted knitting during the Summer Games in Tokyo, according to Entertainment Weekly.

“There’s Tom Daley – he’s got his knitting needles out,” said BBC commentator Katherine Downes, during live coverage on Sunday, 1 August. “What do you reckon he’s crafting there? I wonder who he’s making that purple concoction for?”

Daley later revealed that he’s been making a sweater for Instagram-famous French Bulldog Izzy the Frenchie. A post shared to Izzy’s Instagram confirmed Daley’s gift.

“Sooo excited!! Did everyone catch #goldmedalist @tomdaley making my jumper at the @olympics?” it reads.

NPR later reported that Daley said that knitting has become his way of “finding calm, mindfulness and [it] relieves stress.” It is believed that knitting has plenty of benefits, including sparking creativity, improving motor skills and providing some much-needed relaxation.

Daley said that he even has a separate knitting account, called Made with love by Tom Daley, where he posts his creations — including doggie jumpers — that he sells to raise money for charity. The dedicated page has 100 000 followers and is a platform for Daley’s many creations.

“One thing that has kept me sane throughout this whole process is my love for knitting and crochet and all things stitching,” Daley said in a video this week, showing off a knitted pouch he made to hold his new gold medal that he won in the men’s 10-meter platform event.

He reportedly knitted the pouch for his gold medal “to stop it getting scratched”. The pouch is emblazoned with the Union Jack on one side and the Japanese flag on the other.
