Time, a four-part prison drama, has been lauded as a “touchingly hopeful” series by the Evening Standard. The series, which won the Best Miniseries Award at the 2022 British Academy of Film and Television Awards (BAFTAs) is now available to stream on Showmax.

‘TIME’

Directed by Lewis Arnold, Time follows Mark Cobden (Sean Bean), a former teacher who faces the harsh realities of prison life. Prison guard Eric McNally (Stephen Graham) faces an almost impossible choice when one of the prison’s most dangerous inmates identifies his weakness.

Four-time BAFTA winner and creator of Time, Jimmy McGovern, says the lead roles were written with Bean and Graham in mind.

“These two guys have played really hard men but they’re at their best when they’re not hard when they’re vulnerable. They are brilliant actors full stop, but when they’re vulnerable, they are even more brilliant.”

THE INSPIRATION FOR ‘TIME’

Jimmy McGovern said he has done some work in prisons and has always been “fascinated” by it.

“I think the main reason is, I always felt ‘there but for the grace of God go I’. Because I was young and skint once as well and I did a few naughty things, but I was extremely lucky. I’m always looking for stories and the thing about a British prison is it’s full of stories,” explained Govern.

Graham added: “‘There but for the grace of God’ is an oft-repeated phrase among the cast and crew. Central to the show. What would we do when we’re faced with our own moral compass.”
