In 2021, Canadian singer-songwriter The Weeknd and Euphoria creator Sam Levinson teased their new series, The Idol. The Save Yours Tears hitmaker confirmed that he would be making his acting debut and also scored an opportunity to co-write and executive produce the show with Sam Levinson. Almost a year later, the pair released a first-look trailer for the upcoming series but tweeps have mixed feelings about the upcoming series.

THE WEEKND AND SAM LEVINSON’S ‘THE IDOL’

According to Variety, The Idol centres around a “self-help guru” and a cult leader who forms a complicated and interesting relationship with a rising pop star. The Weeknd will play the cult leader and French American actress, Lily-Rose Depp, will play his love interest.

The six-part HBO series will also star Suzanna Son, Melanie Liburd, Tunde Adebimpe, Steve Zissis, Elizabeth Berkley Lauren and Troye Sivan, best known for his role in the three-part film series, Spud

“From the sick and twisted minds of Sam Levinson and The Weeknd, starring Lily-Rose Depp, The Idol is coming soon to HBO Max,” wrote HBO on the release of the trailer.

‘THE IDOL’ TRAILER GETS MIXED REACTIONS

The Idol received mixed reactions following the release of the trailer on Sunday 17 July. Some tweeps labelled the trailer as “terrible”.

“This will definitely be the worst show of all time,” wrote one tweep.

“This [is] gonna be so terrible and just gonna be filled with random porn scenes like this man did for Euphoria…yeah still gonna watch tho!” wrote another tweep.

“This is not real television, this is a mentally ill girl’s Pinterest board.”

SAM LEVINSON, ‘EUPHORIA’ DRAMA

Following the Euphoria season two debut earlier this year, tweeps questioned Sam Levinson’s use of nudity in the series. Actress Sydney Sweeney, who plays Cassie Howard, told The Independent that Levinson was open to hearing her suggestions about the nude scenes.

“There are moments where Cassie was supposed to be shirtless and I would tell Sam, ‘I don’t really think that’s necessary here,” said the Emmy-nominated actress.

“He was like: ‘Okay, we don’t need it’. I’ve never felt like Sam has pushed it on me or was trying to get a nude scene into an HBO show. When I didn’t want to do it, he didn’t make me.”

After the release of The Idol trailer, tweeps questioned Sam Levinson’s creative choices about nudity once again.

“Sam Levinson’s obsession with nudity and over-sexualisation of his female leads needs to be studied cuz this is not normal,” wrote one tweep.
