Star-studded theatre production ‘Silent Voice’ hits the cinema

One of Aubrey Sekhabi’s early works, ‘Silent Voice’, will be showing at selected cinemas in South Africa on Friday 25 March.

Multi-award-winning playwright and artistic director Aubrey Sekhabi is the man behind the star-studded thriller production, Silent Voice. This comes after the South African State Theatre and Ster Kinekor partnered in 2021 to showcase various theatre productions in cinemas.

STER KINEKOR’S PARTNERSHIP WITH THE STATE THEATRE 

The South African State Theatre’s artistic director, Aubrey Sekhabi told SowetanLive that the theatre’s partnership with Ster Kinekor will “change the performing arts game” in South Africa. 

“Importantly, this collaboration gives us hope for the revival and future of theatre. Now you can access theatre in various parts of our country.”

Acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Motheo Matsau added: “This will provide the rest of the country an opportunity to watch the State Theatre’s productions they may not have ordinarily had the chance to see in the theatre itself.” 

AUBREY SEKHABI’S ‘SILENT VOICE’

Silent Voice, written and directed by Aubrey Sekhabi, is a gripping story about four men who are on the run after a botched robbery that turns into murder. As their plans start to unravel, the audience is let into the midst of the action as they become pawns in a high-stakes fight for survival.

The theatre production is jam-packed with meaningful and realistic commentary about life in modern-day South Africa. Silent Voice is one of Sekhabi’s early works and was devised in 1992.

WHERE TO WATCH ‘SILENT VOICE’

Silent Voice will be showing in Ster Kinekor cinemas on Friday 25 March. 

The theatre production will be showing at Newtown Junction and Rosebank Nouveau in Johannesburg, Musgrave Centre in Durban, Sterland Mall and Brooklyn Nouveau in Pretoria, Baywest Mall in Gqeberha, Boardwalk and Tygervally Malls in Cape Town.
