DC Universe diversity: Sasha Calle is first-ever Latina Supergirl

American actress Sasha Calle, who is of Colombian descent, will be DC’s first-ever Latina Supergirl in the upcoming movie ‘The Flash’.

The Young and the Restless soapie star Sasha Calle has been cast as DC Universe’s first-ever Latina Supergirl for the upcoming film The Flash, set to release in 2022.

CAN YOU FLY?’ DIRECTOR ASKS

The Flash director Andres Mischietti posted a video personally delivering the news to Sasha Calle. He began by telling her he did not yet have an answer and he needed to ask her a few more questions as part of the process. He then asked:

“Can you fly?”

She responded confusedly asking what he meant and then said: “if you need me to”. He then asked if she wanted to fly and proceeded to take out a Supergirl costume, telling her she might need it. He then told her she got the role, bringing her to tears.

Sasha Calle was born in Boston and is of Colombian heritage, this makes her the first latina to play the role of Supergirl

Sasha Calle took to Instagram to share the video and her excitement. 

Translated from Spanish to English the caption reads:

“A Latina super hero ?! On what planet ?! Well, on this planet !! What joy and what pride. Mom, thank you for your effort, for raising me alone and with a lot of love. I adore you with everything I have. You are an example of a superhero.”

CALLE CHOSEN FROM MORE THAN 400 AUDITIONS

Mischietti along with DC films boss Walter Hamada and the producers watched more than 425 actresses audition and were blown away with the toughness and vulnerability that Sasha Calle brought to the role.

Due to the pandemic all auditions were held virtually over Zoom. The actresses were not initially informed on what part they were auditioning for. 

“I saw more than four hundred auditions. The talent pool was truly amazing and it was very hard to make a decision, but we finally found an actress who was destined to play this role,” Mischietti told Deadline. 

SASHA CALLE AN EMMY NOMINEE

Sasha Calle plays the role of Lola Rosales on the soap opera The Young and the Restless. She was nominated for an Emmy in 2020 for Outstanding Young Performer in a Drama Series category. 

The young actress has also starred in miniseries Socially Awkward on YouTube.
