‘The Wife’, ‘Tali’s Baby Diary’ and more: Five SAFTA nominees to stream

The nominees for the 16th annual South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs) were announced on Thursday 14 July with content on Showmax scoring a whopping 158 nominations. Showmax Originals scored 52 SAFTAs in several categories including Best Telenovela Best TV Drama, Best TV Comedy and Best Made for TV Documentary. 

The SAFTAs are set to take place on 2 and 3 September.

FIVE SHOWMAX TITLES NOMINATED FOR A SAFTA

1. ‘DAM’

With 11 nominations, Dam is the most nominated television drama at this year’s SAFTAs. The series stars Lea Vivier, Natasha Loring and two-time SAFTA winner Pallance Dladla. Vivier is up for her first-ever SAFTA in the Best Actress in a TV Drama while Loring is nominated for Best Supporting Actress. 

Dladla is up for Best Actor in a TV Drama while Neil Sandilands, best known for his roles in The Flash, The 100 and The Americans, is up for Best Supporting Actor in a TV Drama. 

Dam has been described as chilling, intriguing and one of the best South African television series.

2. ‘TALI’S BABY DIARY’

Tali’s Baby Diary is the sequel to Showmax’s first-ever original series, Tali’s Wedding Diary. With 11 nominations, the series is joint second in the rankings at this year’s SAFTAs. 

The series stars Julia Antastasopoulos, better known as SuzelleDIY, and Anton Taylor, who has received his first SAFTA nomination for Best Actor in a TV Comedy alongside Riaad Moosa, Bennie Fourie and Saint Seseli, best known for his role in How to Ruin Christmas

 The comedy series is also nominated for Best Achievement in Sound – TV Comedy, Best Achievement in Directing – TV Comedy and Best Achievement in Editing – TV Comedy.

3. ‘THE WIFE’

The Wife is inspired by Dudu Busani-Dube’s bestselling novels, Hlomu The Wife and Zandile the Resolute. The series has set viewing records on Showmax, topped Twitter’s trending lists and now, it is up for 10 SAFTAs. 

Bonko Khoza, who plays Mqhele Zulu, earned his first SAFTA nod for Best Actor in a Telenovela while Abdul Khoza is nominated for Best Supporting Actor in a Telenovela. 

The Wife also picked up nominations in the Most Popular TV Soap or Telenovela category alongside favourites 7de Laan, Scandal, Gomora and Arendsvlei

4. ‘GLASSHOUSE’

Before appearing on Showmax, Glasshouse first premiered at film festivals in the United States and Canada. This year, the film has scored six SAFTA nominations including Best Feature Film alongside Fried Barry and I Am All Girls

Glasshouse follows a family who is confined to their airtight glasshouse and they must do what they can to survive…Until the sisters are seduced by a stranger who upsets the family’s rituals, uncovering a past they are forced to bury.

5. ‘DEVILSDORP’

Devilsdorp, a documentary that investigates 11 killings in Krugersdorp between 2012 and 2016, is the most nominated documentary at this year’s SAFTAs. The series is nominated for Best Made for TV Documentary, Best Achievement in Cinematography – Documentary, Best Achievement in Editing – Documentary amongst others. 

“The result of an 18-month research process, Devilsdorp shows again that truth is stranger than fiction, especially in South Africa,” says director David Enright who is also up for a SAFTA.
