It was recently reported that American producer Ruth Carter will be involved in the production of a biopic that looks at the life of iconic South African rapper Linda “ProKid” Mkhize.

While the film, African/American, focuses on ProKid’s impact on the South African hip-hop scene, it also looks at the story of Sydney “Syd Money” Hall and his work with ProKid.

Vic Mensa NOT casted in role of ProKid

Grammy-nominated American rapper Vic Mensa will be starring in the film as Syd Money and not as ProKid as some tweeps have assumed since the announcement of the upcoming biopic.

SOUTH AFRICA STANDS UP FOR PROKID

South African hip-hop fans were outraged by the news when some thought that Vic Mensa would play the role of Linda Mkhize aka ProKid.

Many were in disbelief that an American would portray the role of a South African rapper when they expressed that South Africa has more than enough talented actors who could play the role.

It has not been confirmed which actor will play the role of ProKid in the film, but according to Black Film and TV there are talks for Blood & Water actor Thabang Molaba to play the legendary rapper.

WHO IS THABANG MOLABA?

Thabang Molaba is a 25-year-old actor who was first introduced to South African audiences on Mzansi Magic’s The Queen. The Johannesburg-based actor played the role of Gift Mabuza in The Queen

One might also know Molaba from Netflix’s Blood & Water where he played Karabo “KB” Molapo alongside Ama Qamata, Khosi Ngema and Natasha Thahane. The actor has also had a role in Diamond City. He will still be a part of the Blood & Water cast in the second season of the series that is due to be released soon. The news of who will be playing ProKid is yet to be confirmed by the film’s producers.

MORE ON AFRICAN/AMERICAN

The upcoming film has a number of successful filmmakers behind it. The script will be written by Jamie Burton-Oare and Skye Dennis will direct. Lanre Idewu will produce and she had this to say about the film:

“African/American” is one of the first projects of many more to come aimed at creating true collaboration across the continents for the purpose of bridging the African diaspora. It’s coming…You can feel it in the air. It’s not just a movie, it’s a movement.
