HBO has given the green light for the straight-to-series prequel, House of the Dragon, which is set to debut in 2022.

Based on George R.R. Martin’s book, Fire & Blood and written by Colony creator Ryan Condal, House of the Dragon and chronicles the rich and turbulent history of House Targaryen.

When is the prequel set?

Set 300 years before the happenings in Game of Thrones, the new series tells the story of House Targaryen and the dragon-lord ancestors of Daenerys, which ruled over Westeros for three centuries, before the rebellion led by Robert Baratheon ended their reign.

House of the Dragon focuses on the House Targaryen and its ancestral hierarchies, delving into the line of the House and its rulers from Aegon I and his sons, Aenys I and Maegor I to Aegon III, who we all know from Game of Thrones.

The book begins with Aegon’s Conquest and the establishment of King’s Landing as the world capital, marking the beginning of a new world order and the formation of the Iron Throne. The story follows the rule of Aegon Targaryen I, who together with his twin sisters, Rhaenys and Visenya, and their dragons conquer six of the seven kingdoms of Westeros, leaving Dorner untouched.

Expect to see the political wranglings of the dark underbelly of Westerosi societies and the ruling classes as Game of Thrones so brilliantly portrayed, silver-haired dragon riders, massive fight scenes between warring nations, plenty of intrigue and romance, and a vast civil war.

When can we expect it?

According to Entertainment Weekly, production has been put on hold due to COVID-19, but casting has begun for the series, although there is no word as to who will feature in the new show.
