Pearl out, Nomalanga Shozi in: BET’s ‘Behind The Story’ gets a revamp

After hosting ‘Behind The Story’ for four seasons, Pearl Thusi is making way for Nomalanga Shozi as the new host of the show.

Pearl Thusi joined Behind The Story in 2018 and she has hosted the likes of Cassper Nyovest, Enhle Mbali, Dineo Ranaka and DJ Zinhle. After four seasons and a bit of controversy, Pearl Thusi is saying goodbye to the show and she’s making way for actress Nomalanga Shozi.

26-year-old Nomalanga Shozi first appeared on South African television screens in 2016 on Rhythm City. She also hosted a hip-hop radio show on Gagasi FM and became the face of BET Africa in 2018. 

In 2019 Shozi travelled to the BET Black Girls Rock festival in New Jersey and rubbed shoulders with the likes of Ciara, Issa Rae, Regina King and Angela Bassett. 


Entertainment commentator Phil Mphela took to Twitter today to announce that Pearl Thusi will be leaving Behind The Story and making way for Nomalanga Shozi as the show’s new host. 

It was not reported why Pearl Thusi is leaving the show but the Queen Sono actress wished Nomalanga well on her new journey as the host of Behind The Story

The show was hit with controversy in August last year when Pearl Thusi shared a clip of her interview with comedian Mongezi Mahlangu aka Tol Ass Mo. The comedian was facing rape charges brought against him by model Lerato Moloi BET Africa later decided to pull the episode after Twitter users blasted the channel.

Although it seems the show will still keep to its usual format, Nomalanga Shozi will host guests on a road trip as she dives deeper into their lives. 

Set to appear on the show is rapper Reason, music producer Zakes Bantwini, Malusi Gigaba’s estranged wife Norma Mngoma. The show will officially kick off on Saturday 9 October.
