Online streaming platform Netflix uploaded the full feature documentary The Social Dilemma on to YouTube for anyone to watch without a subscription until 30 September.

BEWARE OF SOCIAL MEDIA…ON SOCIAL MEDIA

The hit documentary features technology experts sounding an alarm on the dangerous human impact of social networking. While the feature is a cautionary tale of social media, Netflix uploaded the documentary onto social media platform YouTube, ironically.

Directed by Jeff Orlowski, The Social Dilemma digs into the consequences of society’s obsession and reliance on social media.

“We tweet, we like, and we share— but what are the consequences of our growing dependence on social media? As digital platforms increasingly become a lifeline to stay connected, Silicon Valley insiders reveal how social media is reprogramming civilization by exposing what’s hiding on the other side of your screen,” wrote Netflix on YouTube.

Netflix also called for viewers to repair the broken information ecosystem of social media and added unique resources such as discussion guides and classroom tools for students or just general groups to use.

“Now is the time to share the film and have a discussion about repairing our broken information ecosystem. If you’re organizing a group screening, be sure to register your event for a grant of permission and get access to unique resources including discussion guides and new classroom tools,” continued Netflix on YouTube.

SOCIAL MEDIA USERS REACT TO ‘FREE’ DOCCIE

While a Netflix subscription does not necessarily cost an arm and a leg, a large number of people subscribe to other streaming platforms, therefore not everyone has access to Netflix’s goodies.

Many social media users took to the comments section of the documentary to let Netflix know how “noble” they thought this act was.

“Now this is such a brave act for you to out this on YouTube! Literally one of the best and worthy documentaries I have ever watched in my life. Putting it out for everyone to see is insane,” wrote Quadir Dow.

“It was a noble act to put this documentary on YouTube so that anyone can access it and share it to their loved ones. Keep up the good work folks at Netflix,” wrote Manav Jain.

“I’m majoring in Media Communications currently, and can DEFINITELY vouch, this docu is real and worth watching,” wrote Katie Sundermier.
