John Wick, played by the US/Canadian actor Keanu Reeves, is one of the most deadly and legendary assassins known to man in the world of the John Wick franchise. And the third instalment, John Wick: Chapter 3 Parabellum, was one of the most critically acclaimed and financially successful films of the series.
It is therefore no surprise that the exhilarating thrill ride of the franchise will continue with John Wick: Chapter 4.
John Wick: Chapter 4 is set to be released on 21 May 2022, almost exactly three years after the third movie. Though still a wait away, it is good news for action-movie lovers — especially after the explosive cliffhanger at the end of the latest film.
It is believed that director Chad Stahelski will return to head the latest sequel. He co-directed the original John Wick alongside David Leitch and took over solo directing duties for both John Wick: Chapter 2 and John Wick: Chapter 3 Parabellum.
There are plans for a spin-off movie, as well as a video game, television show prequel centered around the Continental Hotel and a possible Atomic Blonde crossover with Charlize Theron in addition to this new sequel.
The John Wick spin-off movie, Ballerina, was initially announced back in July 2017 and jumped into action earlier in 2020, when it was announced that Len Wiseman (Underworld, Live Free or Die Hard) was attached to direct it. Reeves and Stahelski are also on board as a producer and executive producer respectively.
The movie will focus on a young woman who is raised to become an assassin as she seeks the men who killed her family. It is set to be written by Shay Hatten who was previously a writer’s assistant for Team Downey. No release date has been announced.
There has been no official confirmation as to who will appear in John Wick: Chapter 4, but it would be impossible to imagine a John Wick movie without Reeves.
Reeves himself echoed the statement made by Stahelski earlier in May when he said he would gladly be involved with a fourth John Wick movie if the third one was a hit. This was thankfully most definitely the case.
Based on the cliffhanger at the end of John Wick: Chapter 3, one could assume that Laurence Fishburne will be returning to work on the latest sequel. Ian McShane, Lance Reddick, and possibly Halle Berry, John Leguizamo, Asia Kate Dillion, Jason Mantzoukas and Angelica Huston will make their returns to the franchise.
Nobody is officially signed on to appear in the sequel yet, though that will likely change soon.
It is hard to say how far the John Wick franchise will go, but it sounds like Stahelski has a pessimistic view when it comes to the future of the title character.
He has been quoted as saying: “People ask me this all the time, am I ending the movie for a cliff hanger? Is there a number four it’s headed for?
“Keanu Reeves and I have never, from one to two, two to three, ever expected to do a sequel or a follow-up. John may survive all this s**t, but at the end of it, there’s no happy ending. He’s got nowhere to go.
“Honestly, I challenge you right now. Here’s a question to you. How do you want me to end it?”
