Jennifer Hudson becomes second black woman to achieve EGOT status

Jennifer Hudson has become the 17th entertainer to achieve EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony) status following her Tony Award win.

The 75th annual Tony Awards took place on Sunday 12 June at the Radio City Music Hall in New York, to honour Broadway stars. American actress and singer-songwriter Jennifer Hudson has officially become the 17th entertainer to achieve EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony) status.

TONY AWARDS HOSTED BY ARIANA DEBOSE 

West Side Story star Ariana DeBose hosted the Tony Awards on 12 June and opened the awards with a musical number before giving with an opening monologue. 

“The people who make these nominated shows happen and a celebration of the very best of the past season. And what a season it has been! For many of you, it’s been a roller-coaster, with starts and stops, dramatics twists and turns and companies being reunited after nearly two years apart,” said the Oscar-winning actress as per Entertainment Tonight

“I am so proud to be hosting the first Tony awards since Broadway got its groove back and I’m so proud that the theatre is becoming more reflective of the community who adores it. In doing so, it has gained new performers, new creative teams and new fans.”

JENNIFER HUDSON’S EGOT STATUS 

Jennifer Hudson produced the theatre production Michael R Jackson’s A Strange Loop which received a whopping 11 nominations. After the production scooped the Tony Awards for Best Musical and Best Book of a Musical Hudson is celebrating a stellar achievement! 

The 40-year-old entertainer has officially become the 17th entertainer and the 2nd black woman to achieve EGOT status. 

Other Hollywood stars who have achieved this include Whoopi Goldberg, Rita Moreno, John Legend, Robert Lopez and James Earl Jones.

TWITTER CONGRATULATES JENNIFER HUDSON 

Taking to Twitter, tweeps congratulated on her life-changing achievement. 

“Remember when Jennifer Hudson was on American Idol and judge Simon Cowell said she [was] “out of her depth?” wrote one tweep. 

“Absolutely deserved, Jennifer Hudston should always be winning things,” wrote another tweep. 

“Waking up to a world where Jennifer Hudson is EGOT status.”
