Will Mzansi Magic’s telenovela, Gqeberha: The Empire get renewed for another season?

Zimoja reports that Nomsa Piliso, who is the CEO of General Entertainment at MultiChoice Group says the channel still needs to decide if Gqeberha: The Empire will get another season.

“We have not made a call as yet on whether or not we will return for season three, but an announcement will be made after the decision.”

An actor from the show tells the publication that their future lies in the hands of Tshedza Pictures, the production company behind the telenovela.

“Asazi (we don’t know) we doubt the show is returning. Season two was forced because of the negative publicity it got. They brought it back to try and prove a point. But now the ratings have not been amazing. We have not been updated on the contracts,” says the actor.

This comes after DStv renewed the popular isiXhosa telenovela, Gqeberha: The Empire for a second season, despite viewers complains.

“The much-anticipated season, which is already in production, will see some exciting changes and additions to the cast as well as a story line that will grip viewers’ imagination and exceed expectations,” said the channel.

The Eastern Cape-based telenovela introduced award-winning actor Bongile Mantsai as Luzuko’s brother, Hlumelo Mxenge in November 2023.

The Broadcasting Research Council of South Africa (BRCSA) May figures reveal that Gqeberha: The Empire is currently on tenth place on DStv with 579 000 viewers.

The Eastern Cape-based show dropped from the fifth position in February to tenth position in March with 580 000 viewers.

TVSA reports that the isiXhosa telenovela was second place in January with 862 172 viewers and third place in February with 724 000 viewers.

The show also lost leading actors Mbulelo Grootboom, Zikhona Sodlaka, Phila Madlingozi and Akhenime Mfenyana in season two.
