Same-sex scene saga: ‘Eternals’ will not show in these three countries

It is reported that Marvel’s new ‘Eternals’ movie has been pulled from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Qatar because of a same-sex kiss between two of its characters.

Marvel’s new movie Eternals caught the attention of many across the globe for its inclusivity. The superhero movie includes a same-sex kiss that has received a flood of negative comments. This is reportedly the reason why Eternals will not be screened in Saudi Arabia, Qatar or Kuwait.

Chloé Zhao’s Eternals features Marvel’s first gay superhero played by Brian Tyree Henry. His character Phastos shares an intimate kiss with his on-screen partner Ben, played by Haaz Sleiman. 

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Eternals has been met with edit requests by local censors in Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Kuwait but Disney is reportedly not willing to make any changes. 

It is further reported that the decision was made because of the inclusion of the same-sex couple in the film. Homosexuality is illegal in Saudi Arabia. Qatar and Kuwait. 

The film was set to be released in these three countries on Friday 12 November.


In an interview conducted in October, Eternals director Chloe Zhao mentioned that after discussions with Marvel they agreed not to change how the movie is edited. 

“I don’t know all the details, but I do believe discussions were had and there’s a big desire from Marvel and myself — we talked about this — to not change the cut of the movie. Fingers crossed,” she said to IndieWire.

Angelina Jolie who also stars in the film responded saying she was sad for people who criticised the movie and she was proud of Marvel for refusing to cut the scenes out. 

“I still don’t understand how we live in a world today where there’s still [people who] would not see the family Phastos has and the beauty of that relationship and that love,” she told

Eternals follows a race of immortal beings who have superpowers. They have all secretly been living on Earth for thousands of years.

Besides Angelia Jolie, Brian Tyree Henry and Haaz Sleiman, the film stars Crazy Rich Asians star Gemma Chan, Richard Madden, Salma Hayek and Kit Harrington. 

The film is set to be released in the United States on Friday 5 November.
