‘Unlimited’ Emmy moments: The good, the bad and the in-between [watch]

If you missed the Emmy Awards ceremony last night (or just want to relive the highlights), here are some of the best – and worst – moments from the 2021 Emmys.

Actors, musicians and A-list celebrities made their way to Los Angeles’ Staples Center for the 72nd annual Emmy Awards held on Sunday 19 September. Netflix’s The Crown and The Queen’s Gambit were two of the biggest winners while American television host and drag queen RuPaul Charles made history! Although there were some amazing moments, there were also a few not-so-great moments.

THE GOOD

RUPAUL’S EMMY HISTORY

RuPaul walked away with the award for outstanding competition program for his reality show RuPaul’s Drag Race. With 11 Emmy wins in total, RuPaul now holds the record for the most wins for a person of colour.

RuPaul has won the award for outstanding competition program every year since 2017. RuPaul’s Drag Race first appeared on television screens in 2009 and wrapped its 13th season in April this year.

Accepting his award, RuPaul thanked contestants who have been brave enough to share their stories on the show.

MICHAELA COEL’S ‘I MAY DESTROY YOU’ WIN

Michaela Coel bagged her first Emmy win for outstanding writing for a limited series or movie. Her HBO series I May Destroy You secured her the win.

The 33-year-old actor and director dedicated her award to survivors of sexual assault. She gave an impressive speech while accepting her award.

RITA WILSON’S RAPPING SKILLS

American actress Rita Wilson surprised everyone with her rapping skills when she rapped over Biz Markie’s Just A Friend. The opening moments of the show also featured Emmy host Cedric the Entertainer, LL Cool J, Tracee Ellis Ross and Mandy Moore.

THE IN-BETWEEN

SETH ROGEN CALLS OUT THE EMMYS

Seth Rogen used his moment on the Emmy stage to call out the awards show for their Covid-19 restrictions.

As the first presenter on the stage, Rogen pointed out that there were far too many people in the room and that the awards show is not being held outside after organisers previously stated that the Emmys would be an outdoor affair.

THE BAD

A LOSS FOR DIVERSITY

All eyes were on Pose star MJ Rodriguez after she was the first transgender woman to be nominated for outstanding lead actress in a drama series but unfortunately, she lost put to The Crown’s Olivia Coleman.

President of the Color of Change campaign Rashad Robinson said: “The fact that the #Emmys2021 has so many Black and brown people hosting and so winning, is another example of performative ‘commitments’ to representation.”

SCOTT FRANK’S ‘UNLIMITED’ EMMY SPEECH

The Queen’s Gambit director Scott Frank’s speech did not go down so well at the Emmys. Frank won the award for outstanding directing for limited or anthology series or movie and spoke for two minutes after accepting the award.

The director continued his speech through the exit music and said: “I’m almost done”. Comedian Kevin Porter noted Frank’s speech as an “Unlimited speech”.
