The unassuming young comedian, a first-year journalism student, announced on her Twitter feed this week that she had won the accolade at the 2020 E! People’s Choice Awards.

What you need to know about Elsa Majimbo

Majimbo was born in Kenya and grew up in South Africa. The 19-year-old is a journalism student at Strathmore University in Nairobi.

She unexpectedly shot to social media fame during the lockdown earlier in 2020 by uploading silly videos of herself cracking jokes while crunching on potato chips.

The young star’s offbeat videos, in which she usually sports a teeny-tiny pair of 1990s sunglasses, made her trend worldwide, so much so that her comedic talents were recognised by E!

The E! People’s Choice Awards

The E! People’s Choice Awards recognise and celebrate the year’s best individuals in entertainment, music, fashion, beauty and social media. The winners are selected via public votes.

The chip-crunching viral star was nominated in the African Social Star of 2020 category alongside Sho Madjozi, Zozibini Tunzi, Thuso Mbedu, Dimma Umeh, Wian van den Berg, Karl Kugelmann and Lydia Forson.

Reigning Miss Universe Tunzi took to Twitter to congratulate Majimbo on her win and jokingly quoted one of the Kenyan’s famous wacky lines: “It is not by mistake, it is not”.

Majimbo shares her ultra-simple skincare routine

In her trending videos, the social star is often seen without a stitch of makeup on, so it should be no surprise that her skincare routine is minimal.

In fact, she has confessed it only consists of water and petroleum jelly!

Majimbo drinks water to avoid breakouts and washes her face with just water. She uses petroleum jelly as a moisturiser.

In an interview with Allure she said: “Literally, I love my skin, because it just … It’s always so nice.

“That’s why I always drink water, because the idea of my skin breaking out, for me, I dread it. I don’t put any products on my skin because they feel weird on my skin.”

Minimalistic skincare routine aside, Majimbo does have an inner diva and it comes out through her nails. She admitted to loving long nails and told Allure she intended starting with shorter nails and then increasing the length.

“I like really long nails, like [the American rapper] Cardi B. But I don’t want to scare anyone yet, so I’ll start small.

“I’ll start with the short nails and then I’ll go longer, and then that’s when I’ll be like, ‘Boom, guys! This has always been me. This is literally my life,’” she told Allure.

Why 2020 is Elsa Majimbo’s year

This has been a big year for Majimbo. Besides winning at The E! People’s Choice Awards, she also landed a deal with MAC Cosmetics and a collaboration with music star Rihanna as a Fenty brand ambassador — more about that here.

In her Fenty eyewear video she joked: “I’m not sure if I want to take my pictures for Vogue standing up or sitting down”. Soon after that, she actually did score a feature in British Vogue!

Majimbo also recently celebrated one million followers on Instagram.
