Dineo Ranaka, Bassie, Miss Universe among Miss SA judges

The Miss SA pageant is less than two weeks away and excitement is building to see who will take the crown after Shudufhadzo Musida.

The judging panel was announced today and it includes radio personality Dineo Ranaka, University of Cape Town (UCT) vice-chancellor Mamokgeti Phakeng and reigning Miss Universe Andrea Meza.

MISS SOUTH AFRICA JUDGES

Andrea Meza

Andrea Meza was crowned Miss Universe on 17 May. The Mexican-born model was also a runner-up at the Miss World pageant in 2017 and brings plenty of pageant experience to the judging panel. 

Dineo Ranaka 

Dineo Ranaka was selected as a judge after 947 radio host Anele Mdoda left a seat at the judging panel for a spot on the stage as a host. Ranaka admitted that she never saw it coming, but she is excited nonetheless. 

Basetsana Kumalo

Former Miss South Africa, Basetsana Kumalo will also be part of the judging panel. The businesswoman was set to judge the pageant in 2016 but pulled out due an injury. Kumalo won the crown in 1994. 

Tamaryn Green

Tamaryn Green was crowned Miss South African in 2018. She explained that having experienced the journey herself she knows what to look for in a Miss South Africa. 

“I’ll reflect on the responsibilities I had in my year of reign and identify whether our contestants are able to tackle these responsibilities.”

Pia Wurtzbach

German-born Pia Wurzbach won the Miss Universe pageant in 2015. The 32-year-old said the top 10 contestants should embrace being having made it this far in the competition.

Mamokgethi Phakeng 

UCT vice-chancellor Mamokgethi Phakeng says she is looking for a smart young woman with a memorable presence, magnetic personality and clear vision for how they will make a sustainable societal impact. 

Shannon Esra

South African actress Shannon Esra says she will be looking for an ambassador. “I will look for things like self-awareness, compassion, emotional intelligence,” said the Still Breathing actress.

MISS SOUTH AFRICA HOSTS

Hosting the Miss South Africa pageant at Cape Town Grand Arena will be Survivor SA host Nico Panagio and Anele Mdoda. Unfortunately for 947 breakfast show host Anele Mdoda social media users have called for her to be axed from the show after to a body-shaming tweet. 

It will be a Universe take-over backstage with Zozibini Tunzi and Catriona Gray handling everything as backstage hosts. Catriona Gray will also be the Miss South Africa pre-show host. 

THE LIVE SHOW

The Miss South Africa show is set to take place live at the Grand Arena in GrandWest, Cape Town on Saturday 16 October. Since South Africa moved to level one lockdown last week, tickets have gone on sale for the event but you’ll have to present a negative COVID-19 PCR test or proof of vaccination. 

The pre-show will kick off at 16:00 and the Miss South Africa live show will begin at 17:00. It will be broadcasted on MNet and Mzanzi Magic.
