Star rapper Cassper Nyovest has come under fire for allegedly failing to pay royalties to legendary mbaqanga band, Mahotella Queens, for a 2015 collaboration. Mahotella Queens producer, Veli Shabangu, also accused the superstar rapper of not paying his respects to the late Mahotella Queens member, Nobesanthu Mbadu.

MAHOTELLA QUEENS COLLABORATE WITH CASSPER NYOVEST

Nobesanthu Mbadu passed away on Tuesday 31 August due to kidney failure. Her memorial service was held on Tuesday 7 September at the Dumisani Masilela Theatre in Germiston.

Speaking at Mbadu’s memorial service, Veli Shabangu accused Cassper Nyovest of not paying royalties to Mahotella Queens for their collaboration. Cassper Nyovest teamed up with Mahotella Queens for his single Malome off his album Refiloe

Sunday World reports that Mahotella Queens tried several times to reach the rapper but their attempts were unsuccessful.

Limpopo Artists Movement chairperson, Mphoza Mashabela, seconded Veli Shabangu’s statements.

“I can confirm that Veli mentioned that Cassper Nyovest did not pay royalties to our legends and did not even pass a message of condolences to the bereaved family and the remaining members of the group,” said Mashabela.

VELI SHABANGU DRAGS CASSPER NYOVEST

Veli Shabangu dragging Cassper Nyovest did not end at unpaid royalties. Shabangu found it “painful and disrespectful” that Nyovest did not send condolences to Mbadu’s family after her passing.

“He did not even send a word of condolences to the deceased family or other remaining members of the group. Not even on social media or any platform.”

“The Mahotella Queens, who are internationally recognised and treated as royalty overseas, have gone through a lot here at home and have been exploited by these patriarchal males,” said Shabangu.
