Netflix announced ‘Bridgerton’ spin-off based on the story of Queen Charlotte.

The limited Bridgerton spin-off series will dive into the origin story of the gossip-obsessed monarch Queen Charlotte and will also follow young Violet Bridgerton and Lady Danbury.

THE ORIGIN STORY OF QUEEN CHARLOTTE

The prequel series will be written and executively produced by Shonda Rhimes and will not be based on the Julia Quinn novels that have inspired Bridgerton. More details on the cast and teasers are yet to be announced.

“Many viewers had never known the story of Queen Charlotte before ‘Bridgerton’ brought her to the world, and I’m thrilled this new series will further expand her story and the world of ‘Bridgerton’,” said Netflix’s head of global TV Bela Bajaria according to Variety.

“Shonda and her team are thoughtfully building out the ‘Bridgerton’ universe so they can keep delivering for the fans with the same quality and style they love. And by planning and prepping all the upcoming seasons now, we also hope to keep up a pace that will keep even the most insatiable viewers totally fulfilled,” she added.

BRIDGERTON’ SEASON THREE AND FOUR

The news follows Bridgerton being renewed for a third and fourth season as viewers await the much anticipated second season which is said to focus on the love life of Anthony Bridgerton.

Shondaland production house veteran Jess Brownell who has worked on the first and second seasons of Bridgerton, will be the showrunner for season three and four. She takes over from season one and two showrunner Chris van Dusen who will be overseeing the filming and post-production of season two.

“As we continue to expand the world of Bridgerton, we now have the opportunity to devote even more of the Shondaland fold to the Bridgerton-verse,” said Shondaland CEO Rhimes according to Deadline.

“We’ve worked with Jess Brownell for over a decade and have long wanted to find the right project to place in her hands. When it came time to pass the baton, I knew this unique voice was vital to the future of the show,” she added.

“It’s been incredibly rewarding working alongside Shonda, Betsy, and Chris van Dusen on the first two seasons of Bridgerton and now, as these beloved characters are entrusted to me, I cannot wait to lend my unique vision to the next two seasons. I feel so fortunate to have found a home at Shondaland and to have the support of Shonda and Betsy as I move forward into this new chapter,” said Jess Brownell.
