Mixed views of ‘school performance’ standard of ‘Idols SA’ top nine [watch]

The ‘Idols SA’ top nine performed yesterday and unfortunately for some, the standard of their singing was compared to a school performance.

The Idols SA top 10 became the top nine when 23-year-old Ithana (Anathi Conjwa) dropped out of the competition due to medical reasons. Last night, the remaining Idols SA contestants teamed up with five of the hottest local DJs for showstopping performances but some of the contestants missed the mark with the judges.

Last night Idols SA hosted the hottest DJs in the country, DJ Sumbody, Prince Kaybee, DJ Cleo, De Mthuda and Sun-El Musician. The five DJs were paired up with the nine remaining Idols SA contestants for a high-energy performance.

18-year-old Bulelani was the first to perform. He performed with DJ Sumbody but unfortunately for him, his performance of Iyamemeza did not hit the mark for Randall Abrahams. Randall compared Bulelani’s performance to a school performance.

Two contestants who got a similar comment from Randall were Cape Town-based singers Monique Erens and Daylin Sass who both performed with Prince Kaybee.

Randall also said that 30-year-old Berry and 21-year-old S’22kile tend to oversing in their performances.

Randall and Unathi Nkayi butted heads about Nqobie’s performance of Sun-El Musician’s hit Akanamali. While Randall felt it was a good performance, Unathi felt it needed a bit more “oomph”.

Nqobie decided to keep her performance of Akanamali quite simple and opted for a mic stand and only moved away from the mic stand halfway through the performance.

21-year-old Sia Mzizi impressed Randall and Unathi with his performance of De Mthuda’s Emlanjeni. Unathi noted that Sia’s song choice was perfect for his voice. 29-year-old Kevin Maduna brought the house down with his performance of Dj Sumbody’s hit Piki Piki. Unathi said Kevin was a dream to watch.

The judges agreed that Karabo Mathe did exceptionally well in her performance of DJ Cleo’s Gcina Mpilo Yami. They noted that her performance was the perfect way to end the show.

The question is, who will be leaving Idols SA and who will be staying?
