The 94th annual Oscar Awards took place on Sunday 27 March at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. While the awards ceremony were certainly full of on-stage drama, several of Hollywood’s brightest stars were awarded for their brilliant performances in feature films.

JANE CAMPION TAKES HOME BEST DIRECTOR OSCAR

The Power of the Dog director Jane Campion won the award for Best Director. She was up against Steven Spielberg, Kenneth Branagh, Paul Thomas Anderson and Ryusuke Hamaguchi. Jane Campion is the third woman to win the Best Director award. 

In her acceptance speech, Campion said she loved directing because it was a “deep dive” into storytelling. 

“The task of manifesting a world can be overwhelming, sweet thing is, I’m not alone. On The Power of the Dog, I worked with actors I moved to call my friends. They met the challenge of this story with the depth of their gifts,” she continued.

‘CODA’ MAKES HISTORY

Coming-of-age drama CODA (Children of Deaf Adults) is the first film from a streaming service to win Best Picture. The feature film took the award over Don’ Look UpThe Power of the Dog and BelfastCODA star Troy Kotsur is the first male deaf actor to win an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor and the second deaf actor to ever win an Oscar.

While Kotsur walked up to accept his award, the audience applauded him in sign language.
