“Singing Policeman” Thapelo Molomo was crowned the new Idols SA 2022 winner at the Heartfelt Arena, in Tshwane, on Sunday evening 13 November. However, the 29-year-old police officer from Mokopane, Limpopo, was not the only one in the spotlight. Judge Somizi Mhlongo and rapper AKA’s “interaction” on the sidelines has turned into a hot topic of discussion.

Guest performer AKA, real name Kieran Jarryd Forbes, got into the swing of things with judge JR, delivering a medley of songs, including All Eyes on Me. His 2021 hit features JR, Burna Boy and Da L.E.S.

Why did AKA give Somizi a ‘death stare’?

Judging by the look on AKA’s face, Somizi’s feedback on his Idols SA performance clearly did not sit well with the rapper. Not that one can blame him! The controversial judge did not mince his words, bluntly stating that he has seen “better performances” than that of Super Mega.

A video clip of a smug Somizi and AKA’s “death stare” has since been circulating on Twitter. A tweep going by the handle of @SibusisoTech joked that “Ninja looked like he was ready to slap the make up off”, while another tweeted “If looks could kill”. Take a look…

Beef with Cassper? Tweeps weigh in on AKA and Somizi

Tweeps were quick to speculate about the reason for Somizi’s shady feedback. Could it date back to AKA’s explosive Twitter rant against fellow rapper Cassper Nyovest?

@theSA_brand commented: “Somizi is Cassper’s friend, but AKA had to keep calm and not take it that seriously #IdolsSA”

@LizaNjee commented: “Wasn’t Somizi involved in AKAs drama back then? Did they ever fix it?”

TimesLIVE reported in March 2020 on the ongoing beef between AKA and Cassper.

At the time, AKA apparently  lost his cool and threw in the derogatory term “m***ie” in his attempt to belittle Cassper. Super Mega, however, back-tracked with an apology.

“I’d like to apologise to anybody offended by my use of the word “moffie” in a previous tweet. At some point, I thought it wasn’t a big deal to use this word. I understand now tit’s not acceptable.”

Somizi, who carries some serious clout in the LGBTQI+ community, tweeted his “forgiveness” for AKA.

But judging by Somizi ripping into AKA’s performance, one can’t help but ask: Did he really forgive the rapper?
