The show was first announced two years ago and is based on George R. R. Martin’s Fire and Blood, a book that centres around the history of the Targaryen family and is set two centuries before the events of the A Song of Ice and Fire novels, which Game of Thrones was based on. Martin and Ryan J. Condal (Colony) created the prequel, with Miguel Sapochnik serving as primary director.

According to The Verge, the House of the Dragon trailer doesn’t reveal much about the show’s plot but does show off its impressive cast. Apart from Emma D’Arcy’ as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen and Matt Smith’s Prince Daemon Targaryen, other newly revealed cast members include:

  • Wil Johnson as Ser Vaemond Velaryon: Younger brother to Coryls Velaryon and commander in the Velaryon navy
  • John Macmillan as Ser Laenor Velaryon: Son of Corlys Velaryon and Rhaenys Targaryen
  • Savannah Steyn as Lady Laena Velayron: Daughter of Corlys Velaryon and Rhaenys Targaryen
  • Theo Nate as Ser Laenor Velaryon: Son of Corlys Velaryon and Rhaenys Targaryen

What’s more, ever since the announcement of House of the Dragon, fans have been eagerly awaiting any details about the show’s dragons. To their delight, George R.R. Martin spoke to showrunners Martin and Ryan J. Condal on the podcast The Stuff Dreams are Made of, saying that there are 17 dragons in this prequel. He said:

“I’ve always thought this was a good story, it’s my favourite, so I’m looking forward to seeing it live on screen … And again, I’m looking forward to dragons! Obviously, I love dragons. We had three of them in the Game of Thrones but now we are like 17. And hopefully, each of them will have their own personality, they will be visible as soon as you see them, colours and all that. Fans look at the history of the dragons through the GoT, however, the prequel series will delve deeper into the history of the dragons during Targaryens’ reign.”

HBO hasn’t released a specific release date for the Game of Thrones prequel but did say that House of the Dragon will air in 2022 on the HBO Max streaming service.
