Dawn Thandeka King lands role of Mkabayi in ‘Shaka Ilembe’

Actress Dawn Thandeka King, who plays the role of Thandiwe in ‘DiepCity’ has landed the role of Mkabayi kaJama in ‘Shaka Ilembe’.

 Award-winning actress Dawn Thandeka King, who plays the character Thandiwe MaShenge in Mzansi Magic’s cancelled telenovela DiepCity will play Shaka Zulu’s aunt Mkabayi kaJama in Shaka Ilembe.

Daily Sun reports the former Uzalo actress Dawn Thandeka King, who plays Thandiwe MaShenge in DiepCity will play one of the strongest women in the Zulu history Mkabayi kaJama in Bomb Productions’ Shaka Ilembe.   

KaJama’s role was previously played by Gugu Nxumalo on Shaka Zulu’s series 36 years ago. Producer Bongumusa Zungu confirmed to the publication that the talented actress will play Mkabayi when the show premieres in 2023.  

Zungu added the show needed a physically powerful woman, and Dawn was perfect for the role.  

According to the publication, the upcoming film will also focus on the birth of Shaka’s mother Nandi played by Isibaya’s Nomzamo Mbatha who’s also the producer of the show.  

The other part will focus on women who were part of Shaka’s life including King’s character Mkabayi. Shaka Zulu’s history reveals that Mkabayi helped him become ruler over the Zulu nation but later plotted his death.

An excited Dawn Thandeka King said she’s excited to join the drama series and those who know history know that Mkabayi was a powerful woman.  

“She helped kings sit on the throne and she wanted to be hands-on. So, playing this role is big for me as an artist.”  

The award-winning actress will star alongside Lomogang Tsipa, who will play an adult Shaka Zulu, Thembinkosi Mthembu, who will play Dingiswayo, and Wiseman Mncube, who will play King Zwide.  

The actress, who currently plays the role of Thandiwe MaShenge in Black Brain Pictures’ telenovela DiepCity also played the powerful role of MaNgcobo in SABC1’s soapie Uzalo.   

South Africans will only see the show in 2023 as the production of the epic series is currently filming in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal.
