Be it a pet goat or a furry feline – it’s no secret that animals are close to Charlize Theron’s heart.

But the pets that take up the biggest space are the ones from animal shelters, desperately looking for families to call their own. With the festive season around the corner, here’s why the devoted animal lover and Oscar winner wants you to consider adopting a pet.

CHARLIZE THERON ADVOCATES FOR ADOPTION

It’s not just children that the Hollywood star is a proud advocate of adoption for, the Hollywood A-lister also firmly believes that abandoned animals should be given forever homes too.

The star claims her childhood in South Africa — where she befriended a pet goat — spurned her love for animals.

On Tuesday the actress shared images of the four dogs she has rescued over the years on her Instagram and explained why animals are so important to her.

Charlize Theron: ‘I’m not kidding’

“A little known fact about me: As a kid growing up on a farm in rural South Africa, my only friends were animals,” she wrote in the caption. “I‘m not kidding, my best friend was my goat, Bok.”

“Once I moved to the US, it became clear that I couldn’t move my pet goat into a NYC apartment…..but dogs were everywhere I looked –– and I haven’t been without one since.

Animal shelters overwhelmed

The mom-of-two also appealed to her followers and fans to consider adoption when looking for a new pet, especially with the festive season around the corner.

She continued: “@bestfriendsanimalsociety is ALWAYS the first place I go when I need a new furry heart in my life. If you ask me, pet adoption is the only way to go….animal shelters across the country are overwhelmed at capacity, putting tons of lives of homeless dogs and cats at risk.

“If I could save them all, I would (trust me), but this is gonna take all of us.”

The F9 star tagged Best Friends Animal Society which is the largest no-kill sanctuary in the United States and told her seven million followers it’s always the first place she goes to adopt a furry friend.

Theron has also appeared in anti-fur campaigns for PETA and has been involved with Wildlife Works, a global consumer project that creates solutions for wildlife conservation and, WSPA-USA, an international welfare charity.

PRINCESS CHARLENE MOURNING DEATH OF PET DOG

Meanwhile another South African export, Princess Charlene of Monaco, is mourning the loss of her beloved pet dog who died after being run over.

She recently shared a picture on Instagram of her kissing the pooch, posting: “My little Angel died last night, she was run over. I will miss you so much, Rest In Peace”.

Charlene – who is currently in the country – is also an avid animal activist and advocates various anti-poaching campaigns on her social media pages.
