Eight and great: Blue Ivy Carter one of the youngest Grammy nominees
8-year-old Blue Ivy Carter becomes one of the youngest Grammy nominees in history for Brown Skin Girl.

The eight-year-old Blue Ivy Carter, daughter of Crazy In Love singers Beyoncé and Jay-Z became one of the youngest Grammy nominees in history on 11 December when the nomination list was updated.
BLUE IVY AN OFFICIAL GRAMMY NOMINEE
Blue Ivy Carter was nominated in the Best Music Video category alongside her mom who is leading the Grammy nominations this year with nine nominations. Beyoncé’s talented daughter received the nomination for her appearance in Brown Skin Girl from Beyoncé’s The Lion King: The Gift album.
Initially only the main artist — Beyoncé — was listed when the nominations were announced on 23 November.
However, after the Recording Academy recently updated the list of nominated artists, Blue Ivy’s name has been added to the credits of the song’s Best Music Video nomination, along with that of Nigerian singer WizKid who also makes an appearance in the song and video.
Saint Jhn, another artist on the track, has not been listed as a nominee, however.
NOT BLUE IVY’S FIRST TIME ON AWARDS LIST
The nomination at the prestigious 63rd annual Grammy Awards is actually not Blue Ivy’s first award nomination, as this young artist has already bagged a few awards.
In 2019, she won The Ashford and Simpson Songwriter’s Award for Brown Skin Girl at the Soul Train Awards and Video of the Year at the 2020 Soul Train Awards.
Brown Skin Girl also won her an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Duo or Group and a BET Her Award this year.
BLUE IVY IN ‘BROWN SKIN GIRL’
Blue Ivy, who will turn nine in early January before the Grammy Awards ceremony which is set to take place on 31 January, is credited as a featured artist on the track.
She is one of the vocalists on the track, which you can hear on the intro and chorus alongside Saint Jhn. She is also credited as one of the writers of the song and she also appears in the music video with her mom.
THE ‘BROWN SKIN GIRL’ CHALLENGE
Contrary to the concept of colorism, where light skin is considered more beautiful than dark skin, Brown Skin Girl celebrates the melanin in dark and brown skinned women of color.
In the song’s lyrics, Beyonce name-drops beautiful dark-skinned women — model Naomi Campbell, Black Panther star Lupita Nyong’O and Destiny’s Child’s Kelly Rowland — in praise.
This celebration resulted in the viral #BrownSkinGirlChallenge where women of colour posted selfies under the hashtag celebrating their skin colour.
YOUNGEST-EVER GRAMMY NOMINEE
According to Billboard, the youngest-ever Grammy honouree has been Leah Peasall in 2001.
Peasall, at the age of eight, was nominated — and won — Album of the Year, Soundtrack as one of the credited artists (along with her group, The Peasall Sisters) on the O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack.
Blue Ivy Carter will be nine by the time the Grammy Awards ceremony will take place next year.
