There’s still some time left before the world welcomes 2022. Catch up on some local entertainment with these five series and films.

If you’re not at the beach then you probably have some extra time to yourself at home. With a variety of entertaining series and films in South Africa, why not catch up on some of Mzansi’s hottest shows or movies? 

Here are six local series and films you can watch for the rest of the festive season.

1.‘HOW TO RUIN CHRISTMAS: THE FUNERAL’

How to Ruin Christmas: The Funeral is the follow-up to How to Ruin Christmas: The Wedding that was released in 2020. The Netflix series created by Katleho and Rethabile Ramaphakela stars some of Mzansi’s top actors and actresses. 

The series promises laughter, family fun and love.

2. ‘SURVIVOR SOUTH AFRICA: IMMUNITY ISLAND’

Hosted by Nico Panagio, Survivor South Africa: Immunity Island is filled with blindsides, competitive challenges and new-found friendships. The series was filmed on the stunning Wild Coast in the Eastern Cape. 

Survivor South Africa: Immunity Island is available to stream on Showmax.

3. ‘HAPPINESS EVER AFTER’

Directed by Thabang Moleya, Happiness Ever After follows three friends in the next chapter of their lives after navigating hardships in their first film, Happiness is a Four-Letter Word

The Netflix film stars the likes of Khanyi Mbau, Renate Stuurman, Nambitha Ben-Mazwi, Richard Lukunku and Yonda Thomas. Happiness Ever After shows off the beauty of Johannesburg as viewers get a glimpse into the reality of figuring out relationships.

4. ‘AS JY SING’

As Jy Sing is an Afrikaans film that follows a music teacher (Bobby van Jaarsveld) who is looking to take his singing group to new heights. The group overcomes several obstacles throughout their journey. 

The film also stars Leah Van Niekerek, Katlego Maboe and Afrikaans singers Bok van Blerk and Robbie Wessels.

5. ‘BOITY: OWN YOUR THRONE’

Actress, hip-hop star and businesswoman Boity takes us inside her busy life in Boity: Own Your Throne. In the series, we are introduced to Boity’s mom, Modiehi Thulo, her manager Bash Vision and her former assistant Bobby Blanco. 

We get a look at Boity’s life as a traditional healer, a celebrity and how she is with family and friends. The series is available to stream on Netflix.
