Afrikaans singer and cultural firebrand Steve Hofmeyr has reacted angrily to a suggestion that he is trying to secure financial relief from a government scheme intended to help South Africa’s artists and musicians during this global health crisis. As a fierce critic of the ANC, the accusation against Hofmeyr has turned heads.

The contentious article states that Steve Hofmeyr sent an application to the relief fund as lockdown came into effect at the end of March. It carries quotes from the musician, alleging that he was hoping to “get something”. The publication also states the Arts and Culture Department received his submission two days after the national deadline. But Hofmeyr has denied any of this is true.

The story also caught the attention of the EFF’s Mbuyiseni Ndlozi; another public figure who is no stranger to upsetting a few. Musician slams “attention-grabbing” media houses

Steve Hofmeyr vented his frustrations on social media: The controversial figure has slammed Sunday World for running an article which suggests he’s been “humbled” into asking for state assistance. Hofmeyr labelled the story as “mainstream rot”, and claims he has been targeted as the subject of a “race-baiting” campaign.

“What a load of typical mainstream rot. Please prove these three statements, and do it quickly. [The media] need to grab attention at any cost and this race-baiting will give them clicks.”
