Art is becoming a very important part of expression in South Africa. More and more artists are creating a name for themselves. More importantly, more platforms are being created to showcase their work. Here are a few galleries and museums worth visiting.

Zeitz Mocca (Cape Town)

Zeitz Mocca is a museum of contemporary arts that opened very recently at the end of 2017. The museum is a public not-for-profit contemporary art museum. It collects, preserves, researches, and exhibits twenty-first century art. Originating from Africa and its Diaspora. The museum is spread over nine floors. So mark a full day to get through it!

District Six Museum (Cape Town)

Named the Sixth Municipal District of Cape Town in 1867. It was established as a mixed community. The museum was established in December 1994. It works with the memories of the District Six experience.

Gallery Momo (Johannesburg & Cape Town)

Gallery Momo is a South African contemporary art gallery. It represents both South African and international artists. The first space opened in 2003 in Johannesburg. The Cape Town space followed in 2015. The galleries host many exhibitions throughout the week and on Saturdays.

Circa on Jellicoe Gallery (Johannesburg)

This gallery is a hub that explores technology and contemporary artwork. Located in Rosebank, Circa celebrates art and architecture. The gallery is open from Monday to Saturday. It is closed on Sundays and public holidays.

The Old Court House Museum (Durban)

The Old Court House Museum is the oldest public building in the central district of Durban that dates back to the Anglo-Zulu War 1879. The museum pays delightful homage to the heritage of Durban.

Blue Caterpillar Art Gallery (Pietermaritzburg)

Situated in the Butterflies for Africa complex, the gallery exhibits both local and international artists. The different styles include sublime landscapes, quirky French villagers and contemporary woodcut prints.

Luthuli Museum (Groutville)

The Museum is dedicated to the legacy of Chief Albert Luthuli. He was the President-General of the African National Congress (ANC) from December 1952 until 1967. It was a regular meeting place for people linked to South Africa’s freedom struggle while Luthuli had been banished.

Goodman Gallery (Johannesburg & Cape Town)

Founded by Linda Govin in 1966. The gallery was a “resolutely non-discriminatory space” during apartheid. It represents both emerging and established artists in southern Africa.

Alice Art Gallery (Roodeport)

One of the largest privately owned galleries in Africa. It specializes in South African artists. In addition to contemporary art and investment art, the gallery also private collections. If you are interested in buying an art piece, this is the perfect gallery to begin with.

Iziko

The word ‘Iziko’ is isiXhosa for ‘a hearth’. This is typically the central space in an African homestead. Iziko deems itself as a central place for gathering together South Africa’s diverse heritage.
