Student photographer to fly SA flag at World Photography Awards

Aidan Murgatroyd from Stellenbosch Academy of Design and Photography has been selected to represent South Arica in the Student Competition of the Sony World Photography Awards. Murgatroyd is one of 16 photographers who have been shortlisted for the awards. 

The winner will be announced on 12 April. 

AIDAN MURGATROYD’S JOURNEY TO PHOTOGRAPHY

As per his website bio, Aidan Murgatroyd is a professional photographer and graphic designer based in Centurion, Gauteng. While growing up, the South African-born photographer and his family moved around a lot. 

The family moved between Botswana, Dubai and Thailand before Aidan returned to Mzansi in 2017. Murgatroyd studied journalism at the University of Oregon in the United States before moving to Stellenbosch Academy of Design and Photography to study “his true passion”, photography and design. 

“[I] wanted to travel, connect and interact with the people, places and spaces that make up the South African experience. Finally in 2021, at the first chance available, I undertook a countrywide road trip over five months,” said the talented photographer.

“The goal? To ascertain what it means to be South African, especially in a nation that encompasses so many cultures, languages and identities.” 

SONY WORLD PHOTOGRAPHY AWARDS 2022

Aidan Murgatroyd is one of 16 photographers who have been shortlisted for the Student Competition at the Sony World Photography Awards 2022. All the finalists are between the ages of 18 and 30 years old are all enrolled at higher education institutions. 

For his original gallery titled Becoming South African, Murgatroyd mentioned that as a third culture kid, he has always wanted to explore what it means to be South African. 

“As a child of mixed cultural background with one English and one Afrikaans parent, even in the midst of family gatherings, I felt a sense of otherness.” 

The winner of the Student Competition will be awarded Sony digital equipment worth €30 000 (approximately R500 000). 

The winner will be announced on Tuesday 12 April.
